In this procedure, cells or tissue samples are obtained from a suspicious lesion and examined under a microscope to directly evaluate cellular and tissue architecture. Histopathological results provide the essential information needed for physicians to develop an appropriate treatment plan from the outset, rather than making multiple adjustments later.
Dr. Nguyen Van Khanh, Department of Radiology, Hanoi French Hospital, shares:
“Regarding timing, a breast biopsy is only indicated after a comprehensive evaluation using appropriate imaging modalities. This approach helps avoid unnecessary biopsies of clearly benign lesions while ensuring that suspicious findings are not overlooked. When breast cancer is detected at an early stage, the likelihood of cure is high, and both treatment outcomes and quality of life are significantly improved.”
Biopsy decisions are not based solely on tumor size. Radiologists carefully assess the imaging characteristics of a lesion before recommending tissue sampling. Suspicious features suggestive of malignancy may include: marked hypoechogenicity (the nodule is darker than the adjacent strap muscles), irregular shape, irregular or spiculated margins, angular margins, indistinct borders, non-parallel orientation (taller-than-wide), and the presence of microcalcifications within or associated with the lesion.
The biopsy technique is selected according to the specific characteristics of each lesion:
- Fine-needle aspiration (FNA) uses a very thin needle to extract cells from a lesion. It is often applied for preliminary assessment in selected cases or for evaluating suspicious lymph nodes.
- Core needle biopsy (CNB) obtains a larger tissue sample, allowing for histological evaluation of tissue architecture. It is the most commonly used method for the definitive diagnosis of breast cancer.
- Vacuum-assisted breast biopsy (VABB) may be considered for more precise tissue sampling, particularly in small or challenging lesions, and can reduce the need for diagnostic surgery.
At Hanoi French Hospital, breast biopsy is performed within a comprehensive and carefully structured evaluation pathway. Before any procedure, patients receive detailed counseling regarding the indication, available options, and subsequent management steps.
Close collaboration among oncologists, gynecologists, and diagnostic imaging specialists ensures that the diagnostic process is accurate, transparent, and safe—so that every clinical decision is based on solid medical evidence and clear patient understanding.
