According to Dr. Pham Thu Thuy, Clinical and Interventional Cardiology Department, Hanoi French Hospital:
“Hypertension is a chronic condition. Its management involves both lifestyle modification and the appropriate selection of antihypertensive drug classes, with the dual goals of controlling blood pressure values and preventing target-organ damage, thereby improving long-term prognosis.
Even when blood pressure is well controlled, regular follow-up remains essential to assess stability, detect abnormal fluctuations, and screen for complications at an early stage.”
Overall cardiovascular risk varies from one patient to another; therefore, there is no single fixed treatment regimen for hypertension. During follow-up, physicians may need to adjust medication dosages, change drug classes or combine different treatment approaches depending on each patient’s response and tolerance.
In addition, Dr. Thuy emphasizes that effective hypertension management requires close collaboration between doctor and patient. Patients are encouraged to:
- Measure blood pressure regularly at home
- Attend follow-up visits as scheduled
- Proactively inform their doctor about changes in daily routines, work conditions, stress levels, or medications being used
