Open fractures vary in severity. Common signs include:
- A fracture with a wound near the fracture site
- Bone may be visible through the wound
- If surrounding soft tissues such as blood vessels or nerves are damaged, there may also be numbness, loss of sensation, or absent pulse
According to Dr. Cao Manh Lieu, Orthopedic Specialist at Hanoi French Hospital, with many years of experience in trauma and orthopedics:
“Motorbike accidents very frequently cause open fractures (bleeding near the injured area). The patient must be urgently transferred to a medical facility as soon as possible to:
- Stop the bleeding
- Check for vascular or nerve injury
- Avoid delayed treatment because it can lead to dangerous complications such as infection, osteomyelitis, delayed union, nonunion, and in severe complex cases, risk of losing the limb.”
