In healthy individuals, occasional PVCs are usually benign and have little impact on overall health. However, PVCs may also be a warning sign of underlying cardiovascular conditions such as coronary artery disease, cardiomyopathy, or inherited arrhythmia syndromes that have not yet been diagnosed.
Frequent PVCs (10,000–20,000 PVCs/day) and very frequent PVCs (over 20,000 PVCs/day) can lead to serious complications, including:
- Cardiomyopathy and heart failure
- Ventricular tachycardia and ventricular fibrillation
- Reduced quality of life
- Sudden cardiac death
Therefore, when symptoms appear or when PVCs are incidentally detected, patients should be evaluated by a cardiologist to determine the cause, assess disease severity, and establish appropriate monitoring and treatment.
Radiofrequency (RF) catheter ablation was previously reserved for cases where medications were no longer effective. Today, ablation is indicated earlier in the treatment pathway.
For young patients without cardiomyopathy, early evaluation and early catheter ablation can completely eliminate PVCs, reduce or remove the need for long-term medication, and prevent dangerous complications as the condition progresses.
During catheter ablation for PVCs, the ablation electrode is positioned precisely at the ectopic focus after its location has been identified using earliest endocardial activation mapping or pace-mapping techniques. Advanced 3D cardiac mapping systems provide significant support in identifying the ablation site, improving the likelihood of complete cure.
