Successful Emergency Surgery for Teenager with Uterine Endometriosis

Hanoi French Hospital has successfully carried emergency surgery on a teenage girl with endometriosis of the uterus, after the tumor ruptured leaving about 300ml of blood in her abdominal cavity.

Within 40 minutes of the emergency call, the surgery was successfully completed and the tumor excised, preserving the patient’s reproductive capabilities.

Previously, the patient had experienced prolonged abnormal abdominal pain and was diagnosed with ovarian endometriosis with a large tumor. The patient had a treatment plan, but no surgical intervention was indicated at the time of examination.

However, shortly after being diagnosed, the disease progressed with complications, and the patient was admitted to HFH in severe abdominal pain.

MRI and ultrasound results showed the tumor had ruptured.

In this emergency, the obstetrics and gynecology doctors at the hospital consulted and decided to immediately proceed with emergency laparoscopic surgery.

Dr. Cao Thi Thuy Ha, the operating physician, said: “This was a case of uterine endometriosis at a fairly young age, rapidly progressing and complex. If we did not intervene and operate on time, it could impair ovarian function, affecting chances of future pregnancy.”

Thanks to timely rescue and surgery, just 24 hours after the surgery, the patient was able to function normally and was discharged from the hospital after two days.

The condition is treated with medication, surgery, or both. In cases of large endometriosis tumors and patients who do not respond to medical treatment, doctors may recommend early surgery to avoid complications.

Women should seek medical examination immediately upon noticing any abnormal signs such as abdominal pain during menstruation, limited menstrual flow, abnormal vaginal discharge, etc., to detect gynecological diseases and receive timely treatment.
