This method enables doctors to visualize the entire lumen structure, assess the degree of calcification and stenosis, detect atherosclerotic plaques, and identify any anatomical abnormalities in the coronary arteries if present. It is considered one of the most advanced and effective techniques for screening and assessing the risk of coronary artery disease.
According to the guidelines of the European Society of Cardiology (ESC), MSCT coronary angiography may be indicated for the following groups:
- Individuals with cardiovascular risk factors such as hypertension, diabetes, dyslipidemia, smoking, physical inactivity, abdominal obesity or overweight, or a family history of early-onset coronary artery disease (men under 55 years, women under 65 years).
- Individuals with suspected but nonspecific symptoms of coronary artery disease: atypical chest pain, shortness of breath, fatigue during exertion, etc.
- Individuals with abnormal health check results, such as electrocardiogram (ECG) suggesting myocardial ischemia, echocardiogram showing regional wall motion abnormalities, mildly elevated cardiac enzymes, or abnormal lipid profiles.
- Healthy individuals seeking proactive screening to assess potential cardiovascular risks, especially before engaging in high-intensity exercise or undergoing major surgery.
Although MSCT coronary angiography is a non-invasive and safe diagnostic method, it must be performed under proper medical indication and the supervision of a cardiologist.
Image interpretation and evaluation require a high level of medical expertise. In many cases – particularly those with mixed plaques, significant calcification, or abnormal findings – close collaboration between cardiologists and radiologists is essential for accurate diagnosis.
At Hanoi French Hospital, MSCT coronary angiography is performed according to international standards. Patients receive consultation and pre-scan evaluation directly from a cardiologist. The advanced multi-slice CT system delivers high-quality coronary images while maintaining radiation exposure within safe limits. Once the results are available, the cardiologist will explain them in detail and develop an appropriate monitoring or treatment plan if abnormalities are detected.
