Physiotherapy to Assist Post-Operative Care

Last updated: August 26, 2025

Recovery from an operation is not just physical. Recovery is psychological, physiological and social, too.

Physiotherapy to Assist Post-Operative Care

Clinical Physiotherapy is designed to not just reach your previous levels again, but surpass them. With a carefully considered treatment plan, Physiotherapy allows you to use your new-found health to its full potential.

Hanoi French Hospital’s Dr. Dung explains further:

“Physiotherapy strengthens both your body and your mind. After a traumatic experience our body can feel weak. In the past, surgery patients were advised to rest, to do nothing, to let their body’s recover but we know now that what actually creates the best environment and conditions for recovery is to gently push ourselves into action. We encourage patients to set achievable goals and work towards success. The psychological lift you feel helps to boost your physical ability. Our body’s systems learn to work together again, and create a functioning physiology. Working with a trained physiotherapist means you are not alone on your path back to power.”

Allowing the patient take an active role in a treatment plan is hugely beneficial. You curate your plan according to your goals, and the physiotherapist adapts it using a S.M.A.R.T. approach. Let’s use the example of returning to exercise after knee surgery. Your goals should be:

S – Specific

  • Your goal could be “go running”, but it’s better to include specific goals like “run 5 km”.

M – Measurable

  • Is it something that you can measure as complete? Time, distance and other “countables” are great milestones for success.

A – Achievable

  • Is your goal too difficult for the start of your physiotherapy course? Let’s re-set our goal to running 1km, then we can re-evaluate after we reach that.

R – Relevant

  • Does this goal help your recovery overall? Will running help strengthen your knee and provide muscle support for your knee joint in the future? Yes, it’s definitely relevant!

T – Time-centred

  • When would you like to achieve this by? Your physiotherapist can help identify what’s possible and how many sessions it might take depending on your case.

With our goal of running 1km set, you can now tailor your exact physiotherapy plan and begin learning the exercises you need to re-strengthen your knee and it’s surrounding muscles. Then, after balancing your exercises around strengthening both legs, you can add a change in diet to aid your recovery. You can adapt your sleep pattern to better serve your goals. You can take control of your recovery in a way that creates a stronger and healthier you.

Following this patient-centered, multi-disciplinary approach to recovery allows Hanoi French Hospital to create bespoke plans that benefit all aspects of your life. Patients at HFH receive more than just a surgical procedure – we provide comprehensive care so that you can take a more active role in your life while recovering. You can then rest assured that your health is the priority at Hanoi French Hospital.
