On the occasion of Pink Ribbon Month 2022 and Vietnamese Women’s Day – October 20th, Hanoi French Hospital (HFH) organizes Pink Ribbon Day Festival dedicated to special care for women’s health.
Breast Cancer protection as an agenda
Breast cancer is the most common cancer among women with a declining but still real mortality rate and, more worryingly, increasingly prevalent among younger women. The risk of breast cancer increases with age and the possibility grows faster when combined with an unhealthy lifestyle. The good news is, breast cancer can be completely cured if detected early and treated promptly and properly.
In Vietnam, according to the 2020 statistics of the Global Cancer Registry (GLOBOCAN), breast cancer is the most common cancer among women with 21,555 new cases, accounting for over 25% of the total number of cancer cases. Many breast cancer patients are only diagnosed at an advanced stage. Due to limited awareness of the disease, people do not detect suspicious signs that allow to proactively screen and detect breast cancer early, leading to treatment at a late stage, with a reduced chance of cure, expensive and prolonged treatment costs.
Pink Ribbon month
The Pink Ribbon Movement was co-founded in October 1991 by Mrs. Evelyn Lauder – Vice President of Estee Lauder Group and Ms. Penney – Editor-in-Chief of “Self” magazine, in order to launch global cancer prevention through the Pink Ribbon icon.
Originating in the US in 1985, every year October is chosen by the United Nations as Breast Cancer Awareness Month – also known as Pink Ribbon month. It is intended to help the world understand the dangers of breast cancer, promote early detection and treatment, and ways to prevent breast cancer.
Breast cancer screening is the most effective way to detect the disease early, to increase treatment efficiency and to limit risks, and especially to reduce treatment costs for patients. The most effective ways of breast cancer screening:
- Women aged 20-30 years with no added risk factors: Screen for breast cancer by self-examination regularly and by specialist examination every 3 years.
- Women 40 years of age and older with no added risk factors: Get screened for breast cancer every year with a mammogram or ultrasound.
- Women with added risk factors for breast cancer (like occurrence within your direct family) should have an ultrasound, mammogram, and magnetic resonance imaging once a year at all ages. Please consult with your gynecologist.
