SUCCESSFUL TREATMENT OF BENIGN PROSTATIC HYPERPLASIA USING THE REZUM WATER VAPOR THERMAL THERAPY – A NEW TECHNOLOGY INTRODUCED IN VIETNAM

Hanoi French Hospital (HFH) recently performed a successful surgery for patient L.V.N, who was diagnosed with benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), using Rezum Water Vapor Therapy – one of the most advanced technologies currently available, and one of the first cases to be applied in Vietnam.

The patient was admitted to the hospital with persistent lower urinary tract symptoms including difficulty urinating. After clinical evaluation and imaging studies, doctors confirmed the presence of benign prostatic enlargement measuring approximately 50 grams. As medical treatment yielded limited improvement, and prolonged symptoms could lead to complications such as urinary retention, recurrent urinary tract infections, bladder stones, or even renal dysfunction, the doctors convened in consultation. The team determined that Rezum was the most appropriate, minimally invasive, and effective treatment approach for this patient.

The procedure was performed collaboratively by Dr. Nguyen Dinh Lien – Head of Urology and Andrology Surgery Department, E Hospital, and Dr. Vo Van Quy – Head of Surgery and Anesthesiology Department, Hanoi French Hospital. The entire intervention took less than 10 minutes to complete.

According to Dr. Vo Van Quy, Rezum is a safe, minimally invasive procedure that significantly reduces the risk of complications, preserves sexual function, and allows for rapid recovery. The technique uses radiofrequency-generated water vapor at 106°C, which is injected directly into the enlarged prostate tissue 4–6 times depending on the size of the gland. Each injection lasts only 9 seconds. The thermal energy destroys excess prostate tissue, which is then naturally absorbed and eliminated by the body, helping to open the urethra and restore normal urinary flow.

Dr. Quy also highlighted the key advantages of Rezum therapy:

  • Minimally invasive: Performed via the urethra, no skin incision required.
  • Short procedure time: Typically completed in 10–15 minutes.
  • No need for general anesthesia: Usually requires only local or regional anesthesia.
  • Fast recovery: Most patients resume normal activities within a few days.
  • Preserves sexual function: Minimizes the risk of sexual side effects.
  • Long-term results: Proven to reduce symptoms and improve quality of life for years.

Immediately after the procedure, the patient was alert, pain-free, and had clear urine output via catheter – an encouraging sign of early success. One week after the surgery, the patient recovered quickly, and urinary symptoms showed significant improvement.

With a commitment to delivering high-quality, comprehensive healthcare, Hanoi French Hospital continuously pioneers the adoption of cutting-edge medical technologies to improve treatment outcomes and provide optimal options for patients. Moreover, all operating rooms at HFH are maintained under the highest French standards of infection control, ensuring maximum safety and minimizing surgical complications.
