CONTROLLING HYPERTENSION: FROM REGULAR BLOOD PRESSURE CHECKS TO LONG-TERM MANAGEMENT

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), hypertension is one of the leading causes of premature death worldwide, despite being a condition that can be detected early and effectively controlled.

CONTROLLING HYPERTENSION: FROM REGULAR BLOOD PRESSURE CHECKS TO LONG-TERM MANAGEMENT

Hypertension is often referred to as the “silent killer” because it usually has no clear symptoms in its early stages, while significantly increasing the risk of heart attack, stroke, chronic kidney disease and other serious complications.

On the occasion of World Hypertension Day on 17 May, the World Hypertension League (WHL), in collaboration with the World Health Organization (WHO), highlights the message: “Controlling Hypertension Together: check your blood pressure regularly, defeat the silent killer.”

Accordingly, the key elements of hypertension control include:

  • Regular blood pressure measurement: Everyone should know their blood pressure values. Regular blood pressure checks help detect hypertension early, even before symptoms appear.
  • Hypertension can be prevented and controlled: The risk can be significantly reduced through a healthy diet, regular physical activity, avoiding tobacco, limiting alcohol intake and taking medication as prescribed.
  • Early detection is essential: Most people with hypertension are unaware they have it. Screening and routine blood pressure measurement are critical for effective control.
  • Treatment works: Current hypertension treatments have been proven effective and affordable. Adherence to treatment can help prevent serious complications.
  • Long-term management is essential: Hypertension is a chronic condition that requires lifelong management. Effective control depends on continuous follow-up, treatment adherence and regular medical review.
  • Equity in healthcare matters: Strengthening primary healthcare systems helps ensure access to diagnosis and treatment for everyone.

At Hanoi French Hospital, the World Health Organization’s recommendations on hypertension control are implemented through a systematic and continuous approach.

Patients undergo a comprehensive cardiovascular risk assessment from their very first consultation. Treatment is prescribed by cardiology specialists and combines medication with lifestyle modifications, including dietary adjustments, physical activity, weight management and reduction of cardiovascular risk factors.

More importantly, patients are followed up regularly to assess treatment effectiveness and adjust management plans when necessary, according to the progression of the disease over time.
