Dr. Vu Hoang Thu, Head of the Outpatient Department at Hanoi French Hospital, explains: “In addition to reproductive and gynecological concerns, women should pay attention to their cardiovascular, endocrine and metabolic health, sleep and mental well-being. Depending on each woman’s age, health status, medical history and family factors, we will provide appropriate guidance on the necessary examinations and tests.”
Specifically:
During the reproductive years
Irregular menstruation, persistent fatigue, sleep disturbances and pregnancy plans are issues women should proactively discuss with their doctor.
Cervical cancer screening should be performed at appropriate intervals, even in the absence of symptoms. According to cervical cancer prevention and control guidelines from the Vietnamese Ministry of Health and international guidelines, screening is indicated for women aged 21–65 who have been sexually active, with priority given to those aged 30–49. Screening intervals are determined by age, medical history and previous screening results. Those with abnormal results or specific risk factors require an individual follow-up schedule prescribed by their doctor.
From age 40
Women should pay attention to cardiovascular and metabolic risks. Blood pressure, weight, blood glucose, blood lipid levels and waist circumference should be assessed together, taking personal and family medical histories into account. Patients with a history of gestational diabetes or pre-eclampsia should inform their doctor so that a more proactive prevention plan can be developed.
This is also the stage at which breast cancer screening should be discussed in detail. Women aged 40–74 are recommended to undergo mammography every two years. Those at high risk, such as women carrying genetic mutations associated with breast cancer or those who received chest radiotherapy at a young age, require an individual screening plan, which may begin earlier and include additional screening methods.
During perimenopause and menopause
Declining estrogen levels and the ageing process can affect women’s sleep, mood, cardiovascular health and bone density during these stages.
Women should proactively discuss symptoms such as hot flushes, difficulty sleeping and persistent stress with their doctor if these affect their quality of life.
In addition to continuing to monitor blood pressure, blood glucose and blood lipid levels, women should pay attention to their risk of osteoporosis.
