As many men age, typically after turning 40, they start experiencing inconvenient changes in their daily lives; frequent urination, waking up in the night to urinate, a weak stream when they do so, or incomplete emptying of the bladder – all of which can cause discomfort, poor sleep, fatigue and frustration. These symptoms could be the result of Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH) – an enlarging of the prostate gland. It has a significant impact on men’s lives but, thankfully, medical experts can diagnose and treat the disorder early, enabling men to live disruption-free lives.
There are multiple routes to proper management depending on the severity of the enlargement. Dr. Vo Van Quy, a Urology specialist and Head of Surgery & Anesthesiology at HFH, is here to shed light on this common condition:
“BPH occurs in about 50% of men from 51 to 60 years of age, rising to more than 80% of men over 80 suffering from this condition. Although BPH is not initially dangerous if it is left untreated, it can lead to complications such as urinary tract infections, bladder stones and kidney dysfunction.”
Oral medication may be enough to treat BPH, offering a simple solution that can lead to a much higher quality of life. For cases where medication is ineffective, however, it’s crucial that a doctor carefully assesses the patient’s condition to select the most appropriate path forward, as it is at this point that surgical options may provide a solution.
These can include arterial embolization, stent placement, bipolar endoscopic surgery, laser enucleation, or steam ablation – all of which are used to clear a path for the flow of urine to drain more easily through the movement or destruction of tissue that has created a blockage.
At HFH, we also have the capability to apply Rezum water vapour therapy — the latest minimally invasive technology — to treat BPH effectively while preserving patients’ health and functionality and minimizing complications. There are many benefits to this, including:
- Minimally invasive: Performs the procedure through the urethra, without the need for skin incision.
- Maintains sexual function: Significantly reduces the risk of affecting erectile and ejaculatory function.
- Short procedure time: Takes only 10–15 minutes. Rezum delivers steam at 106°C directly into the prostate in 4–6 short 9-second blasts (depending on prostate size). The steam destroys excess prostate tissue, which is then naturally removed by the body, freeing up the urethral path and improving urine flow.
- General anaesthesia not required: Local anaesthesia is typically enough.
- Rapid recovery: Patients can return to their normal routines within days, depending on prostate size and health condition.
- Lasting results: Symptoms diminish and quality of life improves for years.
